Netiquette Guidelines for Online Projects
Netiquette (noun) net-i-quette : etiquette governing communication on the internet
Netiquette is an important part of how you interact with peers in the classroom as well as people in your online lives. Please review and use the following guidelines in this project/course and consider applying this knowledge to online activities outside of this course. The general idea is to Be Safe, Be Responsible and Be Respectful.
1. Remember the Golden Rule: Do unto others, as you would have others do unto you. Be sure to respect the opinions, beliefs, and feelings of other people. As my husband would say ‘Don’t be a tough-guy texter’. If you wouldn’t say something to someone’s face then don’t say it online.
2. Proofread, fact-check, and be clear and concise. Check your spelling and grammar. You always want to make sure you look intelligent! Check your facts and only use or forward on accurate information. Be clear and concise in your writing and get to the point. Make sure you earn and keep a positive online reputation!
3. Be Safe. Be sure to check around and ensure the site, blog, etc is reputable. Keep yourself safe from scams, viruses, or even negative groups of people. Report instances of bullying, harassment, etc to appropriate people.
4. Privacy. Only share things online that you would share with people in person. Remember that messages, websites, posting, blogs, etc will last forever in some capacity. Also, respect the privacy of other people. If it isn’t your information to share or story to tell then don’t share it.
5. Plagiarism. Give credit where credit is due. Site your sources and get permission to use information if needed.
